COGNITIVE AND BEHAVIORAL TECHNIQUES FORWEIGHT LOSS AND MAINTENANCE. Princess Hotel Room: Princess 1/2 The problem of obesity and overweight is a growing public health problem in many countries. Existing psychological treatments often focus on helping people change their behavior and do not sufficiently emphasize the importance of identifying and cognitively restructuring people’s dysfunctional cognitions. Therefore, the change in their eating habits is usually temporary. People need to learn specific skills, and to respond to negative thoughts that interfere with implementing these skills. These skills include: continually motivating themselves, reframing the disadvantages of dieting, planning and monitoring their eating, seeking support, reducing their fear of hunger, increasing their tolerance of hunger and craving, creating sufficient time and energy for dieting, solving problems associated with dieting, and continuing to use these skills indefinitely. Judith S. Beck, Ph.D., is the Director of the Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research; Clinical Associate Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania; and Past President of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. She presents workshops nationally and internationally on cognitive therapy for a wide variety of psychiatric disorders. She is the author of Cognitive Therapy: Basics and Beyond, translated into 18 languages. Her other books include Cognitive Therapy for Challenging Problems: What to Do When the Basics Don’t Work, The Oxford Textbook of Psychotherapy, Cognitive Therapy of Personality Disorders, and The Beck Diet Solution.
